Process Overview

State and local agencies often have unique data needs that arise on the job. Michigan State Police (MSP) and the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) needed dashboards to display unique datasets for specific audiences. Through AASHTOWare Safety, both agencies were able to develop custom dashboards to meet their needs.

Historically, tracking and reporting on crashes involving MSP patrol vehicles has been a unique challenge for the MSP team. Using Dashboards, the MSP team uses patrol unit VINs to build a custom, internal-only dashboard that displays all patrol vehicle-involved crashes on Michigan roadways. The MSP Crash Team uses this data to improve training for recruits and troopers.

In an effort to increase child passenger safety across the state, the Idaho Transportation Department and Office of Highway Safety (OHS) wanted to provide an easy way for Idaho residents to locate child car seat safety check stations in their area. To encourage parents to get their car seats inspected, ITD and the OHS needed a simple way to share the check site locations with the community.

“It is important to read and clearly understand car seat and booster seat installation use instructions. Having your child’s safety seat checked  by a trained professional provides your child a chance to escape injury in the event of a car crash.”

Idaho partnered with AASHTOWare Safety to build a dashboard that maps all Child Seat Check Stations available statewide. Within the Child Passenger Dashboard, each inspection site is displayed, along with the address, hours of operation, and point of contact information. Any member of the public can access the dashboard to find the nearest check station. The ITD OHS created a QR scan code to take citizens directly to the dashboard.  The scan code is on all Child Passenger Safety educational materials and publications.
