Safety Processes

Our Customer Success team helps agencies turn crash data into actionable insights. The processes below show how they’re making their communities safer.

Comparisons Made Easy Through Statewide Average Crash Rate Dashboard

The West Virginia Department of Transportation uses an internal dashboard developed through AASHTOWare Safety to provide an easy framework for engineers and designers to track crash rates for specified areas and compare their performance to the various statewide crash rate averages for different parameters.

Process Overview

The West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) worked with AASHTOWare to create an internal dashboard that empowers engineers to independently identify crash rates for specific roadway sections and compare them with statewide averages without manually calculating these values.

WVDOT identified the statewide average crash rate as its key measure for identifying areas for safety improvement. In an effort to make this process smoother for the district-level staff and help them determine if their selected roadway exceeds the statewide average crash rate for that specific roadway type, WVDOT partnered with AASHTOWare Safety to create the internal-use Statewide Average Crash Rate Dashboard. The dashboard helps users determine if selected roadways qualify for potential safety improvements and associated HSIP funding.

“It is the mission of the West Virginia Department of Transportation to create and maintain for the people of West Virginia, the United States and the world a multi-modal and inter-modal transportation system that supports the safe, effective and efficient movement of people, information and goods that enhances the opportunity for people and communities to enjoy environmentally sensitive and economically sound development.”

West Virginia Department of Transportation Mission Statement

Designers use the dashboard as part of WVDOT’s design exception process. Analyzing these specific data points is also required for any proposed road resurfacing project. Per the department’s policy, WVDOT designers are required to determine whether road segments are above the statewide average crash rate.

Making this information available through the accessible dashboard has been a win-win for everyone; WVDOT no longer needs to worry about filling timely requests, and the engineers can independently get the information they need to run analyses on specific roadways. Additionally, the dashboard makes it easier for safety engineers and designers to run their analyses on selected roadways.
