* Assuming an agency has an existing, configured AASHTOWare Safety instance and all required data
The Utah Department of Public Safety (UDPS) regularly receives records requests for crash data using Utah’s Government Records Access Management Act (GRAMA). Utah’s General Legislative Session is a 45-day period from January through March. During the session, the UDPS team often sees an increase in public, governmental, and internal data requests related to crashes. These GRAMA requests can span multiple years of data and must be fulfilled within 10 business days. During peak periods, multiple requests may arrive on the same day, making timely responses a challenge.
To streamline the process, the UDPS team relies heavily on the Crash Summary Dashboard. The dashboard allows staff to quickly filter crash data by type, date range, and other variables relevant to each request. CSV files and charts can be easily downloaded and attached to the response, saving time and ensuring accuracy.

Using the Dashboard during the legislative session has become standard practice for the team. The tools reduce the need for manual analysis, ensuring that even high volumes of requests can be addressed efficiently and within the legal timeframe. What once required hours of work can now be completed in minutes, freeing up staff to focus on other priorities while still maintaining transparency with the public and policymakers.

“The Government Records Access and Management Act (“GRAMA”) is a Utah law that provides the public with the right to access certain ‘records’ prepared, maintained, or controlled by a government entity.”
