The North Dakota Department of Transportation uses AASHTOWare Safety to raise public awareness of its Vision Zero initiative to create a culture of shared responsibility for road fatalities in the state.
* Assuming an agency has an existing, configured AASHTOWare Safety instance and all required data
Between 2017 and 2023, 665 fatal crashes occurred on North Dakota roads. Of these, the majority involved one or more contributing factors related to driver behavior, such as speeding, distracted driving, aggressive driving, fatigue, and/or impaired driving. It’s the North Dakota Department of Transportation’s (NDDOT) goal to bring this number down to zero.
“The goal of zero fatalities is not only attainable, but also vital. When it comes to your life, or the lives of your family and friends, is any other number acceptable? We’re aiming for zero fatalities because every life matters. The Vision Zero strategy aims to establish a culture of shared responsibility where motor vehicle fatalities and serious injuries are recognized as preventable and not tolerated. The mission is to eliminate fatalities and serious injuries on North Dakota roadways.”
But, NDDOT can’t accomplish this goal alone—they need the public to commit to safer driving habits and take accountability to help end fatal crashes on North Dakota roads. In an effort to support the Vision Zero initiative and raise public awareness of this goal, NDDOT partnered with AASHTOWare Safety to launch the Vision Zero public dashboard.

The dashboard aims to raise awareness of the fatal and suspected serious injury crashes happening annually in North Dakota, as well as the leading contributing factors in these types of crashes. Users can filter the dashboard by year, location, and Vision Zero priority areas, such as bicyclist, pedestrian, and distracted driving crashes.
While NDDOT works hard to build safe roads, eliminating road fatalities won’t happen in a vacuum. Increasing public awareness of safe driving is crucial to accomplishing this goal. Making this crash data easily accessible to the public helps ensure that North Dakota residents are invested in the state’s goal to end fatal crashes.
It’s essential to inform drivers that many fatal crashes are preventable and that their actions can make a real difference toward achieving Vision Zero.
As the public dashboard is more widely adopted, NDDOT hopes it will inspire safer driving habits for North Dakota drivers and bring the state closer to its goal of zero fatal crashes.
“The North Dakota Strategic Highway Safety Plan (Vision Zero Plan) is the result of a comprehensive and coordinated effort by the North Dakota Department of Transportation and hundreds of Vision Zero partners representing state, local, and tribal governments and other public and private organizations. The plan uses data to identify areas to improve highway safety in North Dakota through education, roadway safety enhancements, policy advancements and other solutions.”
