Process Overview
Some analyses require deeper context, more than structured crash data fields can provide. That’s why analysts, engineers, and safety professionals often need to consult the original crash report to better understand the circumstances of a car crash.
AASHTOWare Safety partnered closely with multiple agencies to provide users with an easy way to access crash reports directly within the tool. Implementing this functionality reduces friction in obtaining additional data necessary for crash analysis. Agencies have added a crash report link to the Crash Flyout menu, allowing users to directly access the report for the specific crash they’re viewing in the tool.
This workflow ensures users can find the information they need without slowing down. Direct access to original crash reports enables users to delve deeper when necessary and examine the precise circumstances behind each crash.
For example, users might be reviewing a high-crash intersection that has experienced a mix of angle and sideswipe collisions. While the coded data fields in-app help fill in parts of the story, reviewing the original crash reports can provide a much fuller picture. In the crash report, users can read the officer’s narrative and examine the crash sketch to gain a better understanding of the sequence of events and vehicle movements. This additional context can help guide more targeted safety improvements.
